Organization has goal to feed 3,057 families across the state with match opportunity
Statewide, SD (October 29, 2018) – Thanksgiving is typically a day where family and friends gather to enjoy a traditional meal, good company, parades, and football. However, on this day many households in South Dakota struggle to provide even a basic meal for their family. The holiday season is particularly stressful for food insecure families when children are out of school, without access to school lunches and other school feeding programs. As a community, we have an opportunity to make a difference this holiday season and every day by giving our friends and neighbors a hand up.
Today, October 29th, kicks off Feeding South Dakota’s 8th annual Thanksgiving Meal Drive. This year, the goal is to provide 3,057 Thanksgiving meals to those who struggle with hunger across the state. These meals will be distributed to families through giveaways and agency partners to give to families in local communities.
To reach this goal, Feeding South Dakota is counting on South Dakota’s help by making monetary and food donations. New this year, long-time supporters Greg and Pam Sands are offering a dollar for dollar match up to $14,000 for every online donation made from today until November 9th. “We try to stay focused on being cheerful givers,” Greg Sands says. “It’s the right thing to do.”
“As we gather with family and friends this holiday season and reflect on the many blessings we have, this annual Thanksgiving meal drive provides an opportunity to express gratitude by giving back to others in need,” said Matt Gassen, CEO of Feeding South Dakota.
If you would like to make a monetary donation, $20 will provide a family of four with everything they need for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Credit card donations can be made online at www.feedingsouthdakota.org/donate or over the phone by calling 605.335.0364 and ask for the Gifts Processing Coordinator at ext.126. Frozen turkeys and holiday fixing donations can be dropped off at the following locations, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Sioux Falls, 4701 N Westport Avenue
Pierre, 20562 Grace Avenue
Rapid City, 1111 N Creek Drive
In Pierre, Feeding South Dakota is partnering with the Pierre Area Referral Service to provide 350 Thanksgiving meals to those living in the Pierre and Fort Pierre areas. Special thanks to Scott and Julia Jones for providing turkeys for these meals again this year. “Scott and Julia continue to be faithful supporters of the work we do, not only during Thanksgiving, but throughout the year. We are extremely blessed and grateful,” says Matt Gassen.
