Feeding South Dakota Launches 10th Annual Thanksgiving Meal Drive

Organization has goal to feed 2,100 families with match opportunity

Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, SD (November 3, 2020) – Thanksgiving is typically a day where family and friends gather to enjoy a traditional meal, good company, parades, and football. However, on this day many households in South Dakota continue to struggle to provide even a basic meal for their family. The struggle is even greater this holiday season due to the ongoing challenges with the coronavirus pandemic. The holiday season alone is particularly stressful for food insecure families when children are out of school, without access to school breakfasts, lunches, and other school feeding programs. As a community, we have an opportunity to make a difference this holiday season and every day by giving our friends and neighbors a hand up.

Today, November 3, kicks off Feeding South Dakota’s 10th annual Thanksgiving Meal Drive. This year, Feeding South Dakota’s goal is to provide 2,100 turkeys and Thanksgiving meals to those who struggle with hunger in the Pierre, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City areas.

To reach this goal, Feeding South Dakota is counting on each community’s help by making monetary and food donations. Long-time supporters Greg and Pam Sands are offering a dollar for dollar match up to $15,000 for every online donation made from today until November 20th. “We try to stay focused on being cheerful givers,” Greg Sands says. “It’s the right thing to do.”

“As we reflect on the many blessings we have, this annual Thanksgiving Meal Drive provides an opportunity to express gratitude by giving back to others in need,” said Matt Gassen, CEO of Feeding South Dakota. “So many of the families that we continue to serve are still putting their lives back together from loss of wages and work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re happy to help and rely on the support of our communities to provide hunger relief to local families.”

If you would like to make a monetary donation, $20 will provide a family of four with everything they need for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Credit card donations can be made online at www.feedingsouthdakota.org/donate or over the phone by calling (605)335-0364. Frozen turkeys and holiday fixing donations can be dropped off at the following locations, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Sioux Falls, 4701 N. Westport Avenue
Pierre, 20562 Grace Avenue
Rapid City, 1111 N. Creek Drive

Feeding South Dakota will host special Thanksgiving meal distributions in Rapid City and Sioux Falls on Saturday, November 21 starting at 8 a.m., in both mountain and central time, and will continue until 10 a.m. or until all meals are gone. Each family will receive one frozen turkey and ingredients to prepare a meal with a limit of two meals given per vehicle. An adult must be present to represent the family.

Sioux Falls, W. H. Lyon Fairgrounds, 100 N Lyon Blvd. Thanksgiving meals will be given to the first 750 families.
Rapid City, Central States Fairgrounds, 800 San Francisco St. Thanksgiving meals will be given to the first 1,000 families.

In Pierre, Feeding South Dakota is partnering with the Pierre Area Referral Service to provide 350 Thanksgiving meals to those living in the Pierre and Fort Pierre areas. Those who are in need must apply by November 6 to receive a meal. Special thanks to Scott and Julia Jones of Pierre for providing turkeys for these meals again this year. “Scott and Julia continue to be faithful supporters of the work we do, not only during Thanksgiving, but throughout the year. We are extremely blessed and grateful,” says Matt Gassen. More information regarding the Pierre distribution can be found online at http://www.pierreareareferral.org/services/applications/.
