Opportunity Overview
The chief operating officer is responsible for the overall leadership, planning and management of the programs, operations, and administrative functions of Feeding South Dakota (FSD). The chief operating officer provides leadership in strategic planning, development, and execution of a wide variety of hunger relief programs, operations, financial oversight, human resources, and organizational evaluation. The chief operating officer serves on the Feeding South Dakota leadership team and provides support to the board of directors. 2. Programs and Operations - The chief operating officer leads efforts to build and enhance service delivery and operational capacity of FSD, ensuring that the needs of those served are at the core of all decisions.
3. Financial Performance and Accountability - While the chief operating officer will push the organization and community to realize the full potential of FSD, she/he will also manage the business with skill and an acute understanding of the value of financial stability. Under the leadership of the chief operating officer and chief executive officer, the organization will be recognized as a nonprofit that can responsibly balance mission and margin.
4. Staff Leadership and Culture - The chief operating officer will build on the strong culture of the organization and its people and be a strategic leader who will move the organization forward with respect, integrity, professionalism, and a strong sense of personal and collective accountability.
5. Board of Directors - The chief operating officer oversees the logistics and preparation of staff materials to facilitate effective board operations at the direction of the chief executive officer and ensures board direction and policies related to programs, operations and administration are implemented.
6. Administrative Functions

  • Oversee the organization’s IT, data tracking and reporting systems to support current and future needs.
  • Develops, leads periodic review of, and ensures adherence to organizational policies.
  • Oversees development and maintenance of business continuity and disaster response plans.
  • Oversees compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, funding requirements and contracts governing the operations of FSD.
  • Builds and sustains an organizational culture of workplace and food safety, ensuring compliance with OSHA, AIB, USDA, Feeding America, local and state health departments, food industry and other relevant licensed regulators.

Education, Experience and Requirements

  • Successful candidates for this position must hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field; advance degree preferred. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior leadership position. Experience in organizational development, operational management, financial administration, personnel management, program development and administration preferred. Valid driver’s license, ability to travel statewide and flexibility to attend meetings and events in evenings and/or on weekends required.
