Second Annual Pierre Empty Bowls a Soup-er Success

Our second annual Empty Bowls event was an amazing success!

  • More than 150 adults and children attended the event
  • Our generous sponsors provided 20 gallons of delicious soups
  • Community members came together to learn more about the issue of hunger in our state and what we can do to solve it!

We are grateful and humbled by the community's support of this event. We are especially grateful to Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church and their staff for hosting, the many volunteers who gave of their time and the guests.

We would be happy to have you volunteer with us on future distributions, giving you the opportunity to see your investment at work. Please email Russ Hofeldt, Central Operations Manager, to schedule this opportunity.

Thank you to all who attended and we hope to see you again in February 2019!

What is Empty Bowls?

Empty Bowls is a national event aimed at bringing communities together to raise awarness of the issue of hunger. At Feeding South Dakota's Empty Bowls events, each person who attends is given a hand-painted bowl to remind them of all the bowls we have filled with their help, but also all of the bowls that remain empty.

Our Empty Bowls event in Pierre supports our Mobile Food Pantry Program, a vital program which provides hunger relief to some of the most rural communities in our state. In South Dakota, one in eight people are considered food insecure - they don't know if they'll have enough food to last the week. These are our neighbors, children in our schools, people right in our communities who are in need.

Statistics do not reflect the real story of rural South Dakota where people face lower incomes and significantly higher food costs than those living in urban areas with better access to grocery stores. Nutritious, perishable food, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein are especially out of reach. With our Mobile Food Pantry Program, we are able to bring fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, dairy, and other needed groceries right into communities all through central South Dakota.

This year's event would not have been a success without out generous sponsors. Contact us now about becoming a sponsor for our 2019 Empty Bowls!
