Feeding South Dakota’s Sioux Falls Food Pantry gets boost from annual Boy Scout Food Drive

Sioux Falls, SD (October 23, 2017) – On Saturday, October 28, local Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs will be collecting non-perishable goods for Feeding South Dakota’s local food pantry.  Sioux Falls households will receive a door knocker this week encouraging residents to leave non-perishable food items such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned fruit, pasta, rice or cereal to help feed hungry neighbors in need.

All of the local food items collected will be donated to Feeding South Dakota to stock the Sioux Falls Food Pantry shelves.  The Food Pantry has seen a 15 percent increase in the number of individuals assisted thus far in 2017 compared to the previous year.  From January 1 and September 30, the Food Pantry has provided food to 34,064 individuals with 46 percent of those assisted being infants and children.

“With more people utilizing our food pantry, the need for additional food is great. Food drives like this one help make sure we can keep our shelves full throughout the year. On average, we distribute nearly 145,000 pounds of food per month, which would not be possible without the help of local organizations like the Boy Scouts. We live in a very supportive community, and we are very appreciative of that” said Megan deWit, Sioux Falls Food Pantry Manager.

Last year, the Scouting for Food Drive collected 7,057 pounds of food throughout the Sioux Falls area.  This helped to provide 5,880 meals to hungry individuals in need through Feeding South Dakota’s Food Pantry.

PHOTO AND VIDEO OPPORTUNITIES: Members of the media are invited to speak with the local Scouting for Food Coordinator or a local boy scout participating in the food drive by contacting Jason Cruse at (605) 361-2697. For interviews with Feeding South Dakota’s Food Pantry Manager, please contact Megan deWit at (605) 335-0364 ext. 152. Photo and video opportunities of the scouts bringing the food to the warehouse will be available on Saturday, October 28th from 10-12:00pm at Feeding South Dakota, 4701 N Westport Avenue.

About Feeding South Dakota

Feeding South Dakota, whose mission is to eliminate hunger in South Dakota, is the state’s largest charitable hunger relief organization. In FY17, Feeding South Dakota secured and distributed over 13.6 million pounds of quality nutritious donated and purchased food providing 11.3 million meals to more than 190,000 individuals in need. Feeding South Dakota is able to distribute this food from our distribution centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City through its network of over 400 charitable organizations, supporting over 555 partner agency programs across the state. These organizations then provide this food to individuals who are “food insecure” through youth programs, senior centers, on-site feeding programs, emergency food pantries, after school programs, and homeless shelters.
