What is Plant a Row?

Its simple. Plant one extra row in your garden dedicated to someone who needs it - someone who is going hungry - and donate it to a local food bank or pantry.

Take the pledge to Plant a Row this year and help provide nutritious food to those in need. Learn more about gardening from the SDSU Extension Office and their guide to Vegetable Gardening in South Dakota

You can also help us by spreading the word and sharing our flyer on social media with the hashtag #PlantARow!

What to Donate

Food pantries and soup kitchens need produce that stores and transports well. Refrigerated space is often limited, so foods that don't require refrigeration are always wanted. Please be sure to remove dirt from the produce. Here are some recommendations:

  • Tomatoes (pick when slightly under-ripe)
  • Green beans
  • Squash/Zucchini
  • Peppers hot and mild
  • Cucumbers
  • Onions
  • Lettuce
  • Fruit from fruit trees
  • Corn
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Potatoes

Where to Donate

Produce donations are accepted at any of our three facilities in Rapid City, Pierre, and Sioux Falls (click here for our locations and hours).
