In South Dakota, one in eight people are considered food insecure - they don't know if they'll have enough food to last the week. These are our neighbors, children in our schools, people right in our communities who are in need.
Statistics do not reflect the real story of rural South Dakota where people face lower incomes and significantly higher food costs than those living in urban areas with better access to grocery stores. Nutritious, perishable food, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein are especially out of reach.
Our second annual Empty Bowls event aims at raising awareness for the issue of hunger in the rural communities in our state. The painted bowls serve as a reminder of how many people we are able to help each year, but also how many people go without every day. Proceeds from this event support our Mobile Food Pantry Program.
Our Mobile Food Pantry distributions, planned jointly by Feeding South Dakota staff and participating communities, provide nutritious food to individuals in need across our state. Last year nearly 600,000 pounds of food were distributed to 26,000 individuals. Over half of those served were children and seniors. The program distributes nutritious food on a six-week rotating schedule throughout Central South Dakota, supplementing the work of partner food pantries, shelters, and other hunger relief organizations.
Help us provide improved access to nutritious food by attending this year's Empty Bowls!
